happy memorial day to our american and korean friends!
june 6th is memorial day, 현충일 ( "hyeongchung-il"), in korea (and, coincidentally, d-day in america). it generally falls within one to two weeks of american memorial day, which seems fitting since the US was so heavily involved in the korean war.
living in korea, it’s crazy to me now to think that it’s often nicknamed the “forgotten war” across the pond. the war has a very real presence in the country’s history here. you can view some beautiful and moving photos from the war here and here.

we’re actually not up to much today (c has to work, since his company is based overseas), but we’ll meet some newly-made friends later tonight for dinner (and maybe a round of uno or two :)
in general, it seems that memorial day in korea isn’t as big of a celebration than in the states, aside from the usual memorial ceremonies and observances....mainly because it doesn’t always make for a 3-day weekend. but this year, locals are celebrating memorial day in much the same ways that americans do. long-weekend roadtrips. camping. parks. swimming. bbq. beer. and a generally laid back atmosphere, welcoming in the beginning of summer.
here are a few american war posters from the korean war era you might enjoy. numbers 1 and 7 made me laugh. :)

we have friends who serve in the US military. a few of them are stationed in korea. so a big thanks today to those who serve and have served their countries so that we can enjoy the daily freedoms we (too often) take for granted.
oh! and did you know that’s it's also national donut day today in the good ‘ole land of the free? so go and grab some free donuts for us! :)
